Sarah E. Goode Academy x Illustrated Press
We’re proud to present original comics from Sarah E. Goode Stem Academy on Chicago’s Southwest Side! On January 5, 2016, Illustrated Press artist Jamie Hibdon hosted a workshop at the school to teach students the basics of comic-creation along with how to weave storytelling and personal experience into art. The students were invited to tell their own stories and the results are amazing.
Following the workshop session students were asked to exchange their comics with other classes, giving everyone a chance to be published, have their story read and respond to each other’s comics. We’re including a few standouts from Goode students Jennifer Olaez, Casandra Michel and America Salgado. The hand-drawn pieces cover a range of personal themes and experiences familiar to people of all ages, including issues of race and ethnicity, self-identity and gender.
Have a look at the high school works of art and let us know what you think! And congrats to all of the students who worked hard to write, draw and edit their stories to share with the world.
