Announcing “Kedzie Avenue,” a Kickstarter and our new publisher

We’re very happy to announce our upcoming book and our new publisher!

“Kedzie Avenue” takes a full-length look at everyday life on a single street in Chicago. Drawing on a year’s worth of reporting and interviews, the book weaves personal narrative, journalistic reporting and frame-by-frame illustration into a complex portrait of an American city. The reporting is nearly complete, the illustrations are in progress and the project will be published as a full color perfect bound book by Curbside Splendor in fall 2015.

A Kickstarter to fund a long winter of art and illustration launched Monday, Nov. 24 and will run for four weeks. Until then, every contribution at $25 and above is a pre-order for the book. In addition to the extra rewards listed in each tier, you’ll be the first to have a copy of the book mailed straight to your home. ks_kedzielead3x4 (1) Kedzie Avenue runs north-south across our entire city and cuts through a vast range of neighborhoods. Stories in the book take place in the burgeoning developments of uber-hip Logan Square, a homeless encampment under the freeway in Avondale, and a ballet school on a tough block of Marquette Park. In a few pages we move from the country’s largest jail to its largest bakery.

We want this book to capture a lot of amazing stories, and at the same time, present a deep sense of the place we live. Kedzie is more than a book though. We’ll also be working on a series of related projects, including a newsprint version that we’ll distribute to locations along Kedzie, an open studio and art gallery where we’ll do many of the illustrations while presenting documents from the book and a series of drawing and reporting workshops aimed at local youth, all open to the public. KS collage IP Your contribution will help fund these outreach projects, and a long winter of drawing for our illustrators. Everything beyond our goal will go directly to fund printing of the book. Sincere thanks for reading, and please spread the word! We know we can make this an incredible book, and your support means everything.
